TOWN AND PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS – UPDATE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE SERVICES, ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL

‘We have now received formal written confirmation from central government that there will be no postponement of the Town, Parish and Community Councils.  The elections team will be making contact in due course with regards to the necessary arrangements for your local council elections arrangements as is already underway for 1 May 2025..

There has also been clarification provided that as a result of the postponement of the IWC 2025 elections to 2026, Isle of Wight councillors will have their current term extended by one year and once the IWC elections take place in 2026, it will be for a period of three years to bring us back into the normal electoral cycle when then next IWC elections take place in 2029.  It will be at this point therefore that the Town, Parish and Community Councils will once again re-align.

The required statutory instrument has now been laid and will come into effect from 4 March 2025.  This will now allow us to respond to any potential IWC by-elections (including that of Central Rural) where the requisite number of requests from electors to call an election has been received following resignation of a serving councillor and wherever possible will be seeking to coincide with any contested Town, Parish or Community Council elections.’
