ADVANCE NOTICE – CLOSURE OF YARMOUTH BRIDGE FOR MAINTENANCE WORKS

INFO IN FROM ISLAND ROADS

We would like to draw to your particular attention to a press release we have issued in respect of the scheme to repaint Yarmouth Bridge. In particular, we would like to highlight the fact that the final phase of work will require a full road closure between December 16 and December 22.

The repainting of Yarmouth Bridge is a major, lengthy and complex project over 23 weeks. Given the logistical challenges, not least the need to erect a major scaffolding structure, the work has to be completed in one continuous project.

A major consideration in scheduling the work is the requirement to maintain as much river access as possible. The aspect of the project that requires the swinging deck to be in an open position (so the ends can be painted) has therefore been programmed when the harbour is least active. This timing has been agreed after extensive talks with the local marine industry and Yarmouth Harbour Commission.

Because of the project’s scope, it is impossible to undertake work without causing some disruption to river and road users. We have however sought to minimise this inconvenience by carrying out the most disruptive element of the work out of the main summer season.

The repainting of the bridge is vital to keep it in safe working order for years to come. Following this extensive refurbishment, we do not envisage having to close the bridge again for repainting for many years to come.
